New Section – GPS & Mapping

We have just added a new section that will  be built upon as we go on GPS & Mapping as it relates to the field. I  have been working with GPS devices for quite some time now and starting to figure out how they can be used in the bush or the back streets of the mission field to help out and ease everyday use. Checkout the new page and please leave us a comment on any helpful information you may have to be added to our page.

Blocking Large E-mails

When using slow connections such as a Satellite Phones, Fixed Satellites or Dial up access at one point you will be faced with the fact that not everyone understands what the impact of not having high speed Internet access is. Due to the fact that is now somewhat uncommon for people in North America not to have access to high speed Internet, the socially accepted average size of an e-mail has risen to considerable. Today most systems will not block e-mails under 2MB, which will physically choke a dial up or satellite connection.

How do you fix this, well there are several ways. First some Internet Service Providers allow you to specify what you will allow for an e-mail size, but not everyone has access to these settings. The easiest is to configure your e-mail client to not download e-mail over a specified size.

Creative Laptop Bags

When travelling overseas, usually with multiple bags and not wanting to have your laptop sitting out and obvious selecting a good bag is important.  In addition the right bag selection ensures that you laptop or notebook is kept clean and free from dust, debris, bangs and scratches. Up to now that has always been a little boring.  But Skooba Designs now has an alternative for that in a fairly cheap price range, a laptop sleeve that you can draw on and design yourselves.

From their site: “With a flip of the flap, the Skooba Skin converts from a sleek, padded laptop sleeve to a tote, or vice-versa. Skooba Skin is designed to protect a computer while carried inside another bag or suitcase, or to be used on its own for meetings, classes or other times when the laptop alone is all that needs to be carried.”
